Tripura: Married woman allegedly killed by lover, investigation underway

A married woman was allegedly murdered in Tripura West district's Maheshkhala area, on January 17. While the murder appears to be a premeditated act, the cause of death is currently under investigation.

Police sources said that the victim, identified as Kalpana Debnath from Jogendra Nagar area, was living as a tenant in Maheshkhala with Shankar Sutradhar, a man with whom she allegedly had an extramarital relationship.

The police said, “Kalpana had abandoned her children to move in with Shankar several months ago. The incident came to light on Saturday morning when Kalpana's daughter received news of her mother’s death. Upon rushing to the scene, the distraught daughter found her mother’s lifeless body on the ground while Shankar sat on a nearby bed, unperturbed. Initially unable to comprehend the gravity of the situation, the daughter’s cries drew the attention of local residents, who quickly gathered at the spot."

Adding another twist, Shankar's wife arrived at the scene after learning about the incident and his alleged extramarital relationship.

Amid the chaos, locals detained Shankar, tying him up with a rope, and informed the Police of AD Nagar police station.

Police officers promptly arrived at the location, arrested Shankar, and secured the scene for forensic investigation.

“Kalpana’s body was sent to the hospital morgue for autopsy as part of the ongoing murder investigation”, said police.
