Tripura police destroy 800,000 cannabis plants in major anti-drug operation
Authorities in Tripura have dismantled illegal cannabis cultivation spanning over 100 plots across Sepahijala District, destroying approximately 800,000 plants in coordinated raids on December 2.
The twin operations, conducted by local police alongside forest officials and paramilitary forces, targeted key cultivation zones in North Kalamchoura Gram Panchayat and areas surrounding Bishalgarh.
Between 7:00 am and 2:00 pm, Kalamchoura Police worked with Tripura State Rifles personnel, CRPF units and forest department staff to clear cannabis plantations in Pasania and Takkamura Tila forest areas. Officers uprooted and destroyed roughly 550,000 immature plants across 48 separate plots during this phase.
A parallel operation near Bishalgarh Police Station ran from 7:00 am to 11:00 am, focusing on Bangshibari village, Raghunandan Para and Jagatrambari. The joint force eliminated an additional 300,000 immature cannabis plants scattered across approximately 70 plots.
Tripura Police confirmed the raids form part of sustained efforts to disrupt illegal drug cultivation and trafficking networks operating within the state. The coordinated approach involving multiple agencies reflects growing concern over cannabis production in forested and remote areas of the district.
All seized plants were destroyed on site during the operations.
