Tripura police detain 106 for drunken driving, unruly behaviour on New Year’s Eve

Tripura Police detained 106 people for unruly behaviour and drink-and-drive offences during intensified security operations on the intervening night of December 31, 2025, and January 1, 2026, even as New Year celebrations passed largely without incident across the state.

Police said only one minor accident was reported despite large gatherings and late-night festivities. Security arrangements were scaled up, particularly in Agartala, with additional personnel deployed in crowded and sensitive areas and vehicle checks carried out through the night.

A senior police official told India Today NE that the focus was on prevention and visibility. “In different places, especially crowded areas, we increased security. Vehicles were checked, and people found driving under the influence were detained,” the official said, adding that “all precautionary measures were taken to maintain law and order across the state and in Agartala city”.

According to police data, 82 people were detained for unruly behaviour and 24 for drink-and-drive violations. District-wise, detentions for unruly conduct included one in North Tripura, 19 in Unakoti, 42 in Dhalai, and 10 each in Gomati and South Tripura. Drink-and-drive cases were recorded in Unakoti (five), Khowai (one), West Tripura (six), Gomati (four) and South Tripura (eight).

Police described the overall situation as peaceful and under control, crediting night-long checks and coordinated deployments for preventing major incidents.
