Tripura: Pradyot Manikya urges unity for justice in Anjel Chakma murder case, calls for strict action

Pradyot Kishore Manikya Debbarma, Royal Scion and founder of the Tipra Motha Party on Monday, January 12 urged people to remain united in seeking justice for the murder of Anjel Chakma and called for strict action against the perpetrators.

Pradyot made the statement after meeting with the family of the late Anjel Chakma.

Anjel, 24, a resident of Tripura, tragically died in Dehradun after being assaulted on December 9. Police reports stated that he and his brother were allegedly subjected to racial abuse, including being called “Chinese,” by intoxicated men before the attack.

Pradyot said that he had been in touch with Anjel’s family since the day of the incident.

“I spoke with the Chakma student body and also with Anjel’s uncle immediately after the attack. The FIR was registered after we created necessary pressure. My sister, MP Kriti Singh Debbarma, also contacted the Uttarakhand Chief Minister’s Office regarding the matter. The incident occurred on December 9, but the FIR was registered on December 12 due to our intervention. What happened to Anjel could happen to anyone. His only fault was that he looked different and spoke differently. His father serves in the BSF, protecting our borders and our country,” he said.

He further condemned the racial abuse, saying, “No Chinese has entered India to attack anyone, yet the son of a BSF personnel was called Chinese, ‘Momo,’ and ‘Chinki,’ and physically assaulted. As Indians, we must ask ourselves: is this country only for people who look the same, or for everyone?”
Pradyot emphasized unity in the pursuit of justice.

“I have spoken with Anjel’s family. We will fight for justice for him, and politics must not come in the way. This is justice for our North East people. I am hopeful that everyone will come together to ensure the criminals are punished. I stand with the family and will extend all possible support,” he said.
