The Tripura police, on August 25, arrested three women for allegedly chopping off a woman’s hair after tying her hands, over a family dispute in Udaipur sub-division of Gomati district.
The disturbing incident came to light after a video of the act went viral on Facebook, triggering outrage across social media.
According to sources, the victim, a resident of Bhangarpar in Udaipur, was subjected to a public humiliation that “surpassed medieval barbarity.”
The video shows several women tying the victim’s hands and feet before forcibly cutting her hair on the suspicion of adultery.
Speaking on the matter, Gomati District Superintendent of Police Kiran Kumar said, “Yesterday, one incident went viral on social media in which a woman was subjected to torture by her in-laws and some others. We have registered a case against this, and three persons including Manju Rani Das (62), Putul Rani Das (50), and Hamida Banu (60) have been arrested and will be produced before the court.”
On the issue, Udaipur Sub-divisional Police Officer Nirman Das informed that after the video went viral on social media, police personnel rushed to the spot for investigation.
“And it turned out to be true. Yesterday, the victim was not present at her home; however, her husband filed a case with RK Pur Police Station. Based on this, we registered a case and arrested three persons who were also mentioned in the FIR. We have heard that due to some family issues this happened,” he added.
