Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders in Arunachal Pradesh have criticised All India Students' Association (AISA) national president Neha Bora over her remarks praising the student-led Gen Z movement in Bangladesh, accusing her of endorsing a model of regime change that they claim could undermine democratic institutions in India.
Tobom Dai, spokesperson for the BJP's Arunachal Pradesh unit, condemned Bora's remarks in which she extended a “red salute” to the youth of Bangladesh and said their movement for democratic and voting rights had “shown us the way”.
Tame Siyang Tarh, state president of the BJP's youth wing, the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM), also criticised Bora, describing her as a “poster girl” of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi. Tarh accused her of advocating a Bangladesh-style regime change in India and alleged that the opposition's actions risked promoting political instability.
The BJP maintained that the opposition's objective went beyond legitimate political protest, alleging that its actions were aimed at weakening India's democratic institutions.
The controversy intensified after advocate Prashant Bhushan called for “regime change” during a joint press conference attended by Bora and Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) leader Abhijeet Dipke.
The remarks come amid ongoing demonstrations in New Delhi by student and opposition groups against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. The protesters have also demanded action over alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
The dispute has brought competing positions over electoral transparency, democratic rights and the nature of political protest into focus, with BJP leaders questioning the intent behind the opposition's references to Bangladesh's student-led movement.
