Arunachal Pradesh makes history today as it welcomes six nations for the SAFF South Asian Football Federation U19 Championship 2025, marking the northeastern state's debut as host of an international football tournament.
The championship kicks off tonight with an inaugural match between hosts India and Sri Lanka at 7:15 pm at the Golden Jubilee Stadium in Yupia, near the capital, Itanagar. Bangladesh, Bhutan, Nepal, and Maldives complete the lineup of participating nations in the tournament running from May 9-18.
Sports & Youth Affairs Minister Kento Jini has encouraged local residents to attend the matches and witness international football firsthand. The Arunachal Pradesh government has allocated Rs 3.5 crore to the Arunachal Pradesh Football Association (APFA) to organise the event.
"It's a matter of pride for all Arunachalees to host such an international tournament in our state," said Kipa Ajay, Secretary of APFA and Treasurer of the All India Football Federation (AIFF). Ajay confirmed that India's team arrived today at Donyi Polo airport in Itanagar and was welcomed by local officials.
The APFA operates under the presidency of Chief Minister Pema Khandu, highlighting the state government's commitment to developing football in the region.
Indian team coach Bibiano Fernandez arrived earlier to inspect the facilities and logistics arrangements. Officials have assured that the tournament will proceed smoothly regardless of monsoon conditions, as both the Rajiv Gandhi Stadium and Golden Jubilee Stadium Yupia are equipped with modern turf facilities.
Tickets are available in two categories: Rs 550 for covered seating and Rs 250 for open seating, with each ticket valid for two matches. Fans can purchase tickets online through the "Slot Allot" app available on mobile app stores.
The championship is providing valuable experience to over 200 local youths who are involved in organising and supporting the event. Local authorities have coordinated security arrangements with district administration and police officials to ensure smooth operations throughout the tournament.
