Arunachal: Itanagar police warns residents of rising rental and PG scams

Itanagar Police has issued a public alert warning residents about rental house and paying guest (PG) scams targeting people searching for accommodation through social media and online platforms.

Officer-in-Charge of Itanagar Police Station Inspector Techi Nega urged residents to remain cautious while responding to online rental advertisements, warning that seemingly genuine offers could turn out to be fraudulent and result in financial losses.

According to police, fraudsters may post attractive listings for rooms or houses and ask prospective tenants to make advance payments in the name of booking, security deposits or “verification”. After receiving the money, the fraudsters may become unreachable.

Inspector Nega advised residents to take several precautions before making any payment.

Police urged prospective tenants to inspect the property in person before finalising a rental arrangement and to meet and speak directly with the actual property owner or an authorised agent.

Residents were also advised to insist on a written rental agreement and obtain a formal receipt for any payment made.

Police further cautioned people against sending security deposits or advance rent based solely on phone calls, messages or online communication.

Itanagar Police urged residents to verify rental offers thoroughly and remain particularly alert to listings that demand immediate payment or appear unusually attractive.
