Over 60 fish farmers from various districts of Arunachal Pradesh participated in a training session held at the Pabhoi Fish Farm in Biswanath Chariali, Assam on March 22, aimed at boosting the state's fish farming sector.
The session, a part of the state government's ‘Catch Them Young’ initiative was designed to provide skill development to educated but unemployed youth. It follows a successful animal husbandry program, focused on modern freshwater aquaculture techniques and the adoption of scientific fish farming practices to enhance productivity and improve livelihoods.
Minister Gabriel Wangsu, who attended the session, emphasised Arunachal Pradesh’s potential as a fish farming hub, citing the state's unique agro-climatic zones and resources. “Arunachal can be a heaven for fish farming. We have the capability to not only meet internal demand but also export table fish,” he said. Wangsu also encouraged the Department of Fisheries to work closely with farmers to maximize benefits from the Centrally Sponsored Schemes (CSS) and state plan schemes.
The farmers also received essential inputs for their work, including water testing kits, fish feed, and cold storage. Wangsu urged the Department of Fisheries to work closely with the participants to maximise benefits from government schemes, reinforcing the importance of self-employment for youth in the state.
The ‘Catch Them Young’ initiative, conceived by Minister Wangsu, targets educated but unemployed youth, equipping them with the skills needed to become self-employed.
Joyshii Taba, Director of Fisheries, highlighted that the initiative is aimed at promoting the fisheries sector and transforming young people into self-employed entrepreneurs.
