Amid the ongoing budget session of the Arunachal Pradesh Legislative Assembly, Tawang MLA Namgey Tsering (NPP) strongly advocated for a high altitude allowance for government employees residing and working in Tawang district.
Addressing the Assembly, MLA Tsering highlighted the harsh climatic conditions and physical challenges faced by employees stationed in Tawang, which is situated at an altitude of 10,000 feet (3,048 meters) above sea level. The high altitude allowance refers to additional financial compensation or benefits provided to employees working in extreme environments to mitigate challenges such as low oxygen levels, increased physical exertion, and severe weather conditions.
Speaking to India Today, MLA Tsering emphasized that Tawang remains cold throughout the year, with residents relying on Bukhari (wood-fired heaters) for nearly nine months annually. He further stated that the cost of living in Tawang is among the highest in the region, making it difficult for government employees to sustain themselves.
"Government employees posted in Tawang face extreme weather conditions and significant physical hardships. Given these circumstances, I strongly advocate for a high altitude allowance to support them," Tsering stated.
Additionally, he provided updates on the Vibrant Villages Programme (VVP), mentioning that several projects have already commenced, while others are in the pipeline. He also reiterated his previous concerns regarding the use of sacred lands in Tawang by the Army without proper acquisition, emphasizing the spiritual and religious significance of the region.
