Arunachal Pradesh legislator Chau Zingnu Namchoom on Tuesday flagged off a state mountaineering team bound for Ladakh to scale Mount Kang Yatse II, standing 6,250 metres above sea level. The expedition is being led by renowned Everester Tagit Sorang.
The flag-off ceremony took place at Namchoom’s official residence in Itanagar. Namchoom, who represents Namsai constituency and also serves as Advisor to the Minister of Sports & Youth Affairs, extended his support to the young climbers, stressing the importance of adventure sports in inspiring youth.
The “Team Arunachal Summer Expedition 2025” comprises six experienced mountaineers, including one woman participant from Tawang. All members have undergone training at the National Institute of Mountaineering and Adventure Sports in Dirang.
Speaking to India Today NE, expedition leader Tagit Sorang said Mount Kang Yatse II was chosen as the peak because of its suitability for beginners. “I had climbed it in 2019. This season, from July to September, is ideal for expeditions in Ladakh. We are hopeful of support from the Department of Youth Affairs,” he said.
Namchoom also reflected on the setbacks faced by the state’s mountaineering community following the tragic loss of Everester Tapi Mra in East Kameng district. He said climbers like Tagit Sorang and Kabak Yano continue to restore hope and pride through their achievements.
The expedition is being organised by Chau Expedition, with the team expected to begin its journey from Leh in the coming days.
