Media organisations and members of the press community have strongly objected to alleged intimidation and obstruction faced by journalists while covering a protest organised by the All Deori Students’ Union (AdiSU) in Arunachal on Wednesday, April 8.
According to reports, members of an Election Commission team, accompanied by police personnel present at the protest site, allegedly threatened media personnel while they were carrying out their professional duties. Journalists on the ground claimed that they were obstructed and warned while attempting to document the developments during the demonstration.
The press community has condemned the incident, describing it as a serious concern for media freedom and the safety of journalists. They emphasised that any attempt to intimidate or restrict reporters from performing their duties undermines the principles of a democratic system.
Media representatives stated that the role of the press is critical in informing the public and presenting ground realities. Any interference in this process, they said, compromises transparency and accountability in governance.
In addition to the alleged threats, some journalists reported being physically attacked while covering the protest, which coincided with a bandh call in the region. The incident has further escalated concerns regarding the safety of media personnel during field reporting.
Press bodies have urged the concerned authorities, including the Election Commission and local administration, to take cognisance of the matter and ensure that journalists can operate in a secure and independent environment. They have also called for accountability and appropriate action against those responsible for any misconduct.
A confrontation between the ADISU band call and ADISU (ABK) election group led to violence, resulting in injuries to police personnel on duty amidst stone pelting, thereby exaggerating the situation in Pasighat.
Adi Students Union leaders requested everyone to remain calm, maintain peace, and refrain from engaging in any unlawful activities.
