A soul-stirring theatrical adaptation of "Silent Lips, Murmuring Hearts", authored by Padma Shri awardee Yeshi Dorjee Thongchi, captivated audiences during the Premier Show of the Arunachal Rang Mahotsav at Rajiv Gandhi University (RGU).
The play, based on Thongchi’s acclaimed Assamese novel Mouno Ounth, Mukhar Hriday, beautifully portrayed the social and emotional fabric of NEFA (North Eastern Frontier Agency) times. Directed by Bidyut Kumar Nath, the performance drew a massive audience, earning applause for its emotional depth, authentic portrayal of tribal life, and timeless message of unity through love.
Speaking to India Today, lead actor Rinchin shared insights into the preparation, revealing that the team underwent 25 days of intensive training before the performance. “There is immense scope for theatre in Arunachal, especially with government initiatives like the third edition of the Arunachal Rang Mahotsav. The play narrates the love story of a boy and a girl from two different tribes who, despite social barriers, find harmony during the NEFA era,” he said.
Author Yeshi Dorjee Thongchi, who also attended the premiere, lauded the organizers for their cultural commitment. “The novel reflects a time when various communities in NEFA lived in isolation, each believing in their superiority. When the Government of India began constructing roads in these hilly terrains, local communities came together for a shared cause, gradually dissolving divisions and nurturing bonds of love and cooperation,” Thongchi remarked.
Riken Ngomle, Director of Arunachal Rang Mahotsav (ARM), praised the artists and highlighted the state’s untapped potential in performing arts. “This play symbolizes how love and unity emerged even during challenging times. Arunachal Rang Mahotsav, beginning on November 23, will host teams from over ten countries, along with prominent personalities like Shekhar Suman and Anil Hussain. We also plan to offer free two-to-three-day theatre workshops for aspiring participants during the 14-day festival,” Ngomle announced.
