Arunachal's Siang Multipurpose Project set to boost power, tackle floods

Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu unveiled details of the transformative Siang Multipurpose Project, positioning it as more than a conventional hydroelectric dam. The project aims to address critical regional challenges through a comprehensive development strategy.

The initiative focuses on three primary objectives: flood management, water flow correction, and power generation. State-owned NHPC has been commissioned to develop detailed project and feasibility reports, signalling a strategic approach to infrastructure development.

CM Khandu highlighted the project's substantial potential, with projected power generation capacity surpassing 13,500 megawatts. The state secured a significant 26% equity share and will receive 12% free power, marking a substantial economic benefit for Arunachal Pradesh.

NHPC estimates indicate the project could generate 10-12 gigawatts of hydropower, potentially making it India's largest hydroelectric venture. The estimated project cost of Rs 1 trillion underscores its massive scale and strategic importance.

The Chief Minister emphasised ongoing stakeholder consultations, demonstrating a commitment to inclusive development and community engagement.
