Itanagar is witnessing a contemporary celebration of the Solung Festival as Irgang, a curated cultural experience, seeks to connect the traditional heritage of the Adi community with younger audiences through music, art, street culture and traditional performances.
Irgang, described as a modern interpretation of the celebrations surrounding Solung, features live music, DJ sets, skateboarding jams, BMX stunts, B-Boying battles, local food and displays of Adi heritage and traditional artefacts. The two-day event also includes community Ponung dance circles, bringing together traditional cultural practices and contemporary creative expressions.
Speaking to India Today NE, Irgang board member David Gao said the initiative was aimed at presenting the cultural significance of Solung to the younger generation in a format that they could engage with.
“Pomp and gaiety” is the essence of Irgang, Gao said, adding that the two-day event showcases the culture, artefacts and traditions associated with Solung while creating a contemporary platform for young people.
The musical lineup includes performances by local independent artists and bands such as The Genesis, Khrimey and Lego Sisters, alongside DJ sets and other live acts. The event also features street culture activities, including skateboard jams, BMX performances and B-Boying battles.
Traditional Ponung dance circles form a key part of the programme, allowing participants to engage directly with one of the important cultural expressions associated with the Adi community. Local food pop-ups, cafes, live art and curated displays of traditional Adi heritage have also been incorporated into the experience.
Solung, the largest socio-religious and agricultural festival of the Adi community, is observed annually in the first week of September. The five-day harvest festival is associated with prosperity, protection and fertility and is marked by traditional dances, community feasts and other cultural practices.
As Arunachal Pradesh prepares for the annual festival, Irgang is positioning itself as a platform to present Solung and Adi cultural traditions to a younger audience while retaining their traditional elements.
