Indian football legend Bhaichung Bhutia on Sunday inaugurated the Monyul Super League (MSL) — a landmark football tournament taking place at an altitude of 10,000 feet in Tawang, near the Indo-China border. The event marks a major step in transforming Arunachal Pradesh into one of India’s most promising football destinations.
The grand opening ceremony at the GTG High Altitude Stadium was headlined by Bhutia, who hailed the league as a “turning point” for football in the region. Bollywood actress Daisy Shah of Jai Ho fame and several noted singers also graced the occasion, adding glamour to the sporting spectacle.
Bhutia, while addressing the gathering, said, “Arunachal is fast emerging as a hub for football talent. The Monyul Super League will serve as a vibrant platform for young players to showcase their skills, fostering unity, discipline, and sportsmanship across the region.” He emphasized that sports not only unite people but also play a crucial role in shaping the identity of Arunachal as a rising sporting state.
Tawang MLA Namgey Tsering informed that the league features seven teams from Tawang and West Kameng districts, with matches scheduled over a 13-day period starting November 9. The initiative, he noted, reflects the state government’s sustained commitment to developing sports infrastructure and youth engagement in border areas.
Lumla MLA Tsering Lhamu, speaking to India Today, highlighted the socio-economic impact of sports in the Himalayan belt. “In regions like Mon, where industrialization and job opportunities are limited, sports act as a lifeline for the youth, steering them away from drugs and anti-social activities. Football provides hope and purpose,” she remarked.
The Monyul Super League is envisioned as a community-driven sports festival, blending athletic excellence with the rich cultural heritage of the Mon region. It is expected to inspire a new generation of footballers while strengthening the spirit of unity in Arunachal’s highlands.
