A peaceful sit-in dharna was organised at the General Ground in Kharsang under Arunachal Pradesh’s Changlang district on Thursday, April 30 with participants demanding the repeal of the Arunachal Pradesh Freedom of Religious Act (APFRA), 1978.
The protest was organised by the Changlang District Christian Forum (CDCF) under the banner of the Arunachal Christian Forum. The demonstration witnessed participation from members of various Christian organisations, church groups and local residents.
Holding banners and placards, the protesters expressed opposition to the APFRA 1978, alleging that the legislation infringes upon fundamental rights and threatens freedom of religion and peaceful coexistence among different communities. Participants also claimed that the act affects individual liberty and personal choice.
The programme commenced at around 10 am and continued until 2 pm. The event included prayers, devotional songs and speeches delivered by church leaders and representatives of different organisations.
During the gathering, speakers stressed the importance of unity and called for the protection of constitutional rights. They urged the government to reconsider the legislation and take steps towards repealing the act.
According to the organisers, the dharna was conducted peacefully and aimed at drawing the attention of the authorities to the concerns raised by the participants. They stated that the demand for repeal was being made in the interest of maintaining communal harmony and safeguarding citizens’ rights.
