In a move aimed at strengthening local livelihoods and promoting the “Vocal for Local” initiative, a new daily market was inaugurated at Holongi town in Arunachal Pradesh’s Papum Pare district along the Assam-Arunachal border.
Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) of Balijan, Takar Rava, formally inaugurated the Higang Khu Daily Market on Tuesday in the presence of Nabam Nisam, President of the Holongi Huto Market Welfare Committee. The initiative has been facilitated by the Higang Khu Society.
The newly established market is expected to create opportunities for local tribal farmers and vendors by providing a dedicated platform to sell fresh agricultural produce and local products.
Women vendors speaking on the occasion welcomed the initiative, saying the market would help strengthen economic opportunities for local communities while also fostering social and cultural ties between people of Assam and Arunachal Pradesh.
“People from the Capital Complex should come here to buy fresh organic vegetables instead of travelling to Harmoti or Gohpur. We will ensure reasonable market rates,” a local vendor said.
Tap Tapum Higang, proprietor of the land where the market has been set up, said the initiative was conceived as a social service rather than a commercial venture.
“This is aimed at creating a marketplace for local communities in the border region. It can play an important role in promoting trade and strengthening cultural and social relations between the two states,” he said.
To encourage participation from new vendors, Tapum said the usual Rs 100 daily fee had been waived for more than a week.
ADC Takar Rava appreciated the initiative and assured administrative support for the market’s development. He also urged vendors and visitors to maintain cleanliness and hygiene within the market premises.
The establishment of the border market is expected to enhance local commerce while strengthening people-to-people connections between Assam and Arunachal Pradesh.
