East Siang bandh over anti-drug activist Gumin Mize ends peacefully after interim bail

A district-wide bandh called in support of anti-drug activist and Anti-Drug Warrior president Gumin Mize concluded peacefully in East Siang district on Wednesday, May 27, after several hours of protests across different parts of the district.
 

The bandh was organised by various student unions and supporters following Mize’s arrest at the Lakhimpur Police Station in Assam. Protesters also alleged custodial torture by Assam Police during his detention.
 

Supporters and members of several student organisations gathered at checkpoints and public areas to express solidarity with the activist, demanding justice and his immediate release.
 

The protest, which lasted for nearly six to seven hours, remained peaceful throughout, with demonstrators carrying out disciplined agitation across the district.
 

According to reports, the bandh witnessed active participation from multiple student bodies and local supporters, who described the protest as a collective stand for justice and against illegal drug activities in the region.
 

Although normal movement and business activities were affected for several hours, no major untoward incidents were reported from any part of the district.
 

Organisers and local residents later welcomed the peaceful conclusion of the bandh and appreciated the cooperation extended by the public and authorities in maintaining order during the protest.
 

Meanwhile, the granting of interim bail to Gumin Mize brought relief among his supporters and organisations across Arunachal Pradesh, many of whom viewed it as a positive development for the anti-drug movement in the state.
 

Following confirmation of the interim bail order from the court, the 12-hour bandh was called off at around 1 pm.
 

Speaking to the media, Adi Students’ Union president Gomle Ratan said the decision to withdraw the bandh was taken jointly by various organisations after receiving the bail order copy.
