The Itanagar Municipal Corporation (IMC) has directed all commercial establishments in the state capital to paint the exterior of their shops blue by July 10 as part of its Clean Itanagar Mission, aimed at improving the city's aesthetic appeal and urban management.
The directive comes days after the IMC conducted a large-scale eviction drive at Ganga Market on June 27 to remove roadside encroachments and ease traffic congestion.
Following the eviction, Itanagar Mayor Likha Nari Tadar assured displaced street vendors that the civic body would establish a dedicated vending zone equipped with blue sheds within the next two months.
Addressing vendors and hawkers, the mayor said a suitable site has already been identified for the proposed vending zone and sought their cooperation while the necessary infrastructure is developed.
The assurance comes amid concerns raised by vendors affected by the eviction drive. They have urged the IMC to implement the vending zone through the Town Vending Committee in accordance with Section 18(1) of the Street Vendors (Protection of Livelihood and Regulation of Street Vending) Act, 2014, which provides for the creation of designated vending zones for registered vendors.
According to the IMC, the proposed vending zone will offer vendors a secure, hygienic and well-organised space to conduct business while ensuring better traffic management and cleaner public spaces.
The civic body has appealed to vendors and shopkeepers to cooperate with the ongoing initiatives, stating that the measures are intended to create a cleaner, more organised and citizen-friendly Itanagar while protecting the livelihoods of street vendors.
