India’s first high-altitude border race flagged off in Arunachal's Mechuka at 6,200 feet

In a major push to promote adventure tourism and cross-border camaraderie, the first-ever Border National Adventure Racing Championship at a height of 6,200 feet was flagged off today by Arunachal Pradesh Tourism Minister Pasang Dorjee Sona near the Indo-China border.

Held in the remote town of Mechuka, located in Shi Yomi district and surrounded by the breathtaking Eastern Himalayas, this third edition of the championship marks the first time it’s being conducted so close to the international frontier.

A total of 22 teams—each comprising four members—are participating in the event, with over 90 athletes representing various parts of India. The race has also drawn international attention with the presence of a special team from Malaysia, further enhancing the event’s global stature.

Despite challenging road conditions and ongoing highway construction en route to Mechuka, the spirit of adventure prevailed as athletes braved the odds to reach the venue. The race spans a grueling 150 kilometers, traversing rugged terrains and unpredictable high-altitude weather, testing participants' endurance, grit, and teamwork.

This open-format championship serves as a gateway to larger global competitions, with winners earning the chance to represent India at the upcoming Asia Regional Championship.

Veteran teams such as Mahakali and Shershah, known for their multiple wins in adventure sports circuits, are among the contenders. They praised the unique landscape and hospitality of Mechuka, calling it one of the most scenic and challenging race venues in India.

Minister Pasang Dorjee Sona, who also serves as the local MLA and holds portfolios in Tourism, RWD, and Education, highlighted the untapped tourism potential of Mechuka. He emphasized that such high-profile events can position the region as a global adventure destination. He also expressed pride in India Today’s recent accolade, which named Mechuka the "Best Mountain Destination" in the country.
