Menga bridge collapses in Arunachal’s Upper Subansiri; alternate route opened

A key bridge in Upper Subansiri district collapsed after an overloaded dumper truck attempted to cross it, disrupting connectivity to several remote border areas.

The Menga Bridge, a Bailey structure spanning the Menga River near Daporijo, gave way under the weight of a heavily loaded Ashok Leyland dumper carrying construction materials, reportedly exceeding the bridge’s load-bearing capacity.

The bridge served as a crucial link connecting Daporijo to remote circles, including Taliha, Siyum, Nacho, Limeking, and Taksing, making it a vital lifeline for both civilian movement and logistical operations.

Officials said the driver managed to escape without injuries and has been handed over to police for further investigation.

The collapse has impacted the movement of essential supplies and could affect the operations of the Border Roads Organisation in strategically important border areas. However, authorities confirmed that a newly constructed alternate bridge parallel to the collapsed structure has been opened for vehicular movement, partially restoring connectivity.
