The North Eastern Electric Power Corporation (NEEPCO) has clarified the extent of damage caused to its residential colony following the June 24 cloudburst in Arunachal Pradesh's Keyi Panyor district, stating that 54 staff quarters were damaged, of which 24 were completely washed away.
Speaking to India Today NE, Munim Chaudhury, Head of Department (HOD) of the NEEPCO Hydro Project at Yazali, dismissed what he described as speculative claims regarding the extent of the damage and said the figures released by the corporation were the official assessment.
Chaudhury said the cloudburst caused a seasonal stream (nallah) to change its course and swell into a torrent, triggering widespread destruction in the Poosa and Potin areas.
He said NEEPCO initially provided cooked meals to affected families for the first two days after the disaster before outsourcing the service. According to him, more than 300 people are currently being provided three meals a day at a relief camp operating from Vivekananda School inside the NEEPCO colony.
The official added that the corporation has initiated procedures to extend assistance to the family of the deceased employee and is coordinating with the district administration to ensure all possible support for affected staff members.
The June 24 cloudburst triggered flash floods and extensive damage in parts of Keyi Panyor district, affecting residential areas and infrastructure, including the NEEPCO township associated with the Pare Hydroelectric Project.
