Siang project row: Villagers block road, perform traditional ritual in Arunachal’s Ugeng

Tensions over the proposed Siang Upper Multipurpose Project (SUMP) surfaced again on September 14 as a large number of villagers blocked a road leading towards the Siang area at Ugeng village, opposing activities linked to the project.

The villagers also performed a traditional ritual at the site to register their opposition to the proposed multipurpose project.

A large contingent of police personnel was deployed in the area to maintain law and order. Despite the security presence, the villagers continued with the ritual and maintained their stand against the project.

The villagers said development activities that could affect their land and natural resources should be undertaken only with the consent and participation of the communities directly affected.

The SUMP has faced opposition from sections of local communities, who have raised concerns over its potential impact on land, livelihoods and the region’s natural resources.
