Two active cadres of the United Tani Army (UTA), Techi Nera and Tok Takin laid down arms and surrendered at a ceremony held at the Police Headquarters (PHQ), Itanagar on Thursday, July 24.
The surrender ceremony was attended by Arunachal Pradesh Home and Border Affairs Minister Mama Natung, Home Minister’s Advisor Mutchu Mithi, Director General of Police (DGP), senior Inspector Generals of Police (IGPs), and other high-ranking officials.
Welcoming the surrendered cadres back into the mainstream, Minister Natung praised their courageous decision to renounce violence and pledged full support from the government for their rehabilitation under the state’s surrender-cum-rehabilitation policy.
Rehabilitation Support Announced
In a gesture of meaningful reintegration, the Home Minister announced that the surrendered youth would be eligible for free higher education and receive a monthly financial assistance of ₹6,000 to aid in rebuilding their lives and contributing positively to society.
“Peace is essential for development. The government is committed to supporting those who wish to return and be part of Arunachal’s growth story,” said Natung.
Speaking to India Today, both Techi Nera and Tok Takin shared that they were tired of the hardships of underground life and wished to contribute to peace and development in the state. They expressed regret for their past actions and gratitude for the opportunity to return to civilian life.
IGP Chukhu Apa, also speaking to India Today, acknowledged that while some youths are lured into underground outfits by such packages, life in the jungles along the India-Myanmar border is harsh, uncertain, and devoid of purpose. Many such youths endure psychological stress, lack of direction, and face social isolation, often bringing shame and pain to their families.
Urging Arunachal’s youth to take the path of development, Apa emphasized that unemployment cannot be an excuse, as the state is rich in natural resources and opportunities capable of engaging every aspiring individual meaningfully.
