HOJAI: A 30-year-old man has been arrested on charges of alleged rape and murder of a seven-year-old girl in Borhola village of Hojai district in Assam.
The minor girl, suspected to be raped and murdered, was found dead in a field near her uncle’s house where she went to attend a wedding.
The accused has been identified as Joyprakash Kalar alias Munna. He is currently in police custody.
Joyprakash Kalar has been charged with Indian Penal Code (IPC) sections related to kidnapping, sexual assault, and murder and sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.
The incident took place around 12.30 am in the intervening night of Friday and Saturday. Police quoted the locals as saying that the minor girl went missing from a wedding party at her uncle’s residence around midnight.

The locals claimed they had seen the seven-year-old girl with Joyprakash on Saturday night.
Locals have demanded capital punishment for the accused.
The body of the victim has been sent for post-mortem.
