Ambubachi Mela at Kamakhya canceled for 2nd consecutive year amid COVID-19 surge

GUWAHATI: The Kamakhya Devalaya management committee has decided to refrain from celebrating the historical Ambubachi Mela at the Kamakhya Temple for the second consecutive year, following the COVID surge in the state of Assam.

The temple committee has issued a notice to keep the temple remain closed for devotees till June 30.

On Ambubachi Mela, which was scheduled on June 22, the rituals will be performed inside the temple by the priests, entry for devotees will be completely prohibited, said the committee.

The temple was initially closed on May 13 this year keeping the Covid-19 situation in mind for 15 days, which was extended again yesterday, as the temple authority had taken a unanimous decision for everyone's safety.

During the period of Ambubachi Mela, sadhus -- usually a mainstay -- will not be allowed to enter the temple premises as well.

The ‘Dolois’ (priests) of the temple has decided that only the rituals and prayers associated with the festival would be performed by them.
