Assam: 12-day-old infant's body retrieved from well in Sribhumi district, investigation underway

The body of a 12-day-old baby girl was recovered from a well in North Gopalpur village under the Radhapyari Gaon Panchayat in the Patharkandi constituency of Assam's Sribhumi district on Saturday, August 1 prompting a police investigation into the circumstances surrounding her death.

According to preliminary information, the infant's father, Arun Das, told reporters that his wife woke up at around 3 a.m. crying and later claimed that an unidentified woman had taken away their newborn daughter.

After receiving information about the incident, Officer-in-Charge of Bazaricherra Police Station, Khinindra Nath Biswas, along with a police team, reached the village and launched a search operation. During the search, the body of the infant was recovered from a nearby well.

Senior district officials, including the Circle Officer of Patharkandi and the Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO), also visited the spot to assess the situation. The body was subsequently sent to the district civil hospital for a post-mortem examination under the supervision of the district administration.

Police said that although the infant's mother has made multiple claims regarding the incident, the veracity of those statements has not yet been established. Officials are examining all aspects of the case as part of the ongoing investigation.

The incident has caused concern among residents of the locality, with the circumstances leading to the infant's death remaining unclear.

A case has been registered, and police have initiated an investigation into the suspicious death. Officials said the exact cause of death and sequence of events will be determined based on the findings of the post-mortem examination and the outcome of the investigation.
