Assam court awards life imprisonment to man in 2011 murder case

A court in Assam's Sonitpur district has sentenced a man to life imprisonment for the murder of a villager in a case dating back to 2011, officials said.

The verdict was delivered on Friday against Abdul Qadir, who was found guilty of murdering Yasumuddin, a resident of Kurukani Latetapu village, on September 9, 2011.

According to the prosecution, Qadir, along with two accomplices, attacked Yasumuddin with sharp weapons outside his residence, killing him on the spot. The victim's wife also sustained injuries in the assault.

Following the incident, Tezpur Police registered a case and launched an investigation. After the completion of the trial, the court found Qadir guilty of the offence.

The court sentenced him to life imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 20,000.

In default of payment of the fine, Qadir will have to undergo an additional six months of rigorous imprisonment.
