SILCHAR: Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma has said that at least three commando battalions of police will be deployed along the border with Mizoram.

“At least 4000 commandos of Assam Police will be deployed at three locations: Hailakandi, Karimganj and Silchar,” Sarma said.

"Mizoram had opened fire with light machine guns (LMGs) for about 30 to 35 minutes that claimed the lives of five Police personnel. It was really unfortunate,” said Biswa Sarma.

“Such kind of firing is rare, especially inside a country. It may happen along the international border when a foreign country invades,” CM Sarma added.

He said that at least 42 people -- including the SP of Cachar -- sustained injuries in the firing incident.

Meanwhile, the chief minister has claimed that not an inch of the State’s land has been ceded due to Monday’s clash with Mizoram.

“I want to assure the people of Assam that not a single inch of the state's land has been ceded due to yesterday’s clash with Mizoram police,” said Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma.

He further said that the clash was about settlement in forest lands. “Assam will not allow settlement in forest land either by Assam people or be it by Mizoram people,” said CM Sarma.

Sarma said that Assam will not open fire even if the entire district of Cachar is occupied by Mizoram.

“Assam is a responsible state. We will not open fire even if the entire district of Cachar is occupied by authorities in Mizoram,” he said.

“I cannot allow police to open fire on civilians. Children might get killed. We cannot kill innocent people. We will not launch counterattacks. We will defend our land and even die for it but not retaliate by opening fire,” said CM Sarma.

Moreover, the chief minister has claimed that Mizoram Police had opened fire with light machine guns (LMGs) on Monday that claimed the lives of five police personnel.

"We will pay Rs 50 lakh to kin of policemen killed, give government job to one family member, pay Rs 1 lakh to the injured and additional one-month salary to policemen deployed along Mizoram border," he added.
