Assam: Hunting goes wrong, accidental fire kills one

In an incident, a youth, who went on hunting with his friend to a hilltop near Khomabari village along the Assam Arunachal Pradesh border, was killed in accidental firing on June 16th, 2020.

Investigation revealed that the 25-year-old Binod Rajgarh and Biswajit Daimary alias Somaina (18) of the same village went for hunting on that day with two hand-made rifles provided by Kamal Basumatary (38) of Khomabari village in Assam. At the place of occurrence, Binod sustained bullet injury from an accidental fire of Biswajit and died. Biswajit concealed one rifle about 200 metres from the place of occurrence on the hilltop. He came down and handed over the other rifle to Kamal Basumatary, who called Goblai Basumatary (29) of Paslogi village over the phone to inform the family members about the death of Binod.

Goblai is NDFB cadre of 35th Batch and surrendered in 2015 after he came back to Assam, India from Myanmar.

One hand-made rifle has been recovered which was concealed inside bushes in Khomabari village in Assam on being led and shown by Kamal Basumatary. Another handmade rifle has been recovered from near the PO on being led and shown by Biswajit Daimary alias Somaina.

Following items have been recovered from the house of Kamal Basumatary:

  • 16 nos. of lead pieces used for making ammunition (14 of 1 inch and 2 of half-inch in length),
  • 40 nos. of circular-shaped lead pieces,
  • 3 containers with gun powder (about 300 gram)

In this regard, Goblai Basumatary, Biswajit Daimary and Kamal Basumatary were arrested by the Assam police
