Assam: School Inspector nabbed red-handed while taking Rs. 15,000 as bribe

NALBARI: Sensation prevailed in Nalbari in Lower Assam after a senior Government official was caught taking a bribe of Rs. 15,000 by the anti-corruption bureau on Thursday.

Corrupt activities of Jyotsnarani Barman, a School Inspector serving in Nalbari district of Assam, came to the fore in the evening hours of Thursday after she was caught by the anti-corruption bureau while taking a bribe amount of Rs. 15,000.

According to reports, the School Inspector had demanded a sum of Rs. 50,000 out of Rsd. 5 lakh sanctioned for the upgradation of the playground of a Higher Secondary School in Borbhag.

She was reportedly pestering the contractor assigned for the work to give her the aforesaid amount as bribe. The contractor, however, approached the anti-corruption bureau which laid a trap for the official. She was apprehended while taking Rs. 15,000 as an "advance."

A 14-member team of the anti-corruption bureau from Guwahati that had reached Nalbari to crackdown the case promptly arrested the erring official and brought her back to Guwahati and have subjected her to interrogation. Further investigations are reportedly underway.

Despite Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal's assurances of a "zero corruption Assam", there have been numerous reports of corrupt activities in the Government offices in the recent times, with this latest episode in Nalbari serving as a reminder that freedom from corruption remains a distant dream.
