The Assam Government has set a target of providing 2 lakh government jobs over the next five years, while announcing the creation of a high-level task force under the leadership of the Chief Secretary to identify new employment opportunities and accelerate recruitment across emerging sectors.
Presenting the Assam Budget 2026–27 in the Legislative Assembly on Friday, Finance Minister Jayanta Malla Baruah said the government has already delivered more than 1.64 lakh appointments over the past five years and has created 1.15 lakh vacancies to further strengthen the state's employment generation drive.
The minister said the newly constituted task force will identify new sectors with employment potential, streamline recruitment planning and help achieve the government's target of creating 2 lakh employment opportunities during the next five years.
Highlighting the government's focus on transparency and accountability, Baruah also announced that individuals with criminal records or criminal cases against them will not be eligible to avail benefits under government schemes, as part of efforts to ensure that public welfare programmes reach deserving beneficiaries.
The announcements formed part of the government's broader employment and governance agenda aimed at expanding job opportunities while strengthening the integrity of welfare delivery across the state.
