GUWAHATI: Even as Akhil Gogoi's supporters waited with bated breath for the peasant leader's release so that he can contest the polls, the Gauhati High Court (GHC) on Thursday rejected the bail of the peasant leader.

The two judges bench comprising of Justice Kalyan Rai Surana and Ajit Borthakur rejected the bail of the Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) peasant leader in a hearing today.

Earlier, Gogoi's Deputy Dhaijya Konwar had stated that the fiery peasant leader is likely to contest the polls in Sivasagar on a 'Raijor Dal' ticket.

The newly formed political parties Raijor Dal and Assam Jatiya Parishad are said to be eagerly awaiting the release of the peasant leader so that he can join the election campaign. Notably, 'Raijor Dal', the political party backed by the KMSS, is holding its first Convention.

Notable personalities -- such as actress Jerifa Wahid -- have reached Moran (where the 3-day Convention is being held) to participate in the meet, where the party will be given its final shape.

Akhil Gogoi was arrested at Jorhat on December 12 last year for his role in the protests against CAA, which seeks to fast forward citizenship to 'minorities' from neighbouring countries Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan.
