Nagaon bypoll crucial for BJP, win will signal 126-seat sweep in 2031 Assembly polls: Himanta

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has described the upcoming Nagaon Lok Sabha bypoll as a crucial political contest for the BJP, saying a victory there could indicate that the party is on course for a clean sweep in the next Assembly election.

Sarma said that if the BJP wins the Nagaon bypoll, he believes the party could win all 126 Assembly seats in the next Assembly election.

The Chief Minister said the BJP has observed a shift in voter sentiment towards the party over the past month.

"If BJP wins the Nagaon bypoll, then in the next Assembly election we will win 126 seats," Sarma said.

However, he acknowledged that Nagaon is not traditionally a BJP stronghold and has historically been a Congress seat.

"We have seen in the last one month that people are inclining towards BJP. But this is not a traditional BJP seat; it has always been Congress," Sarma said.

The Nagaon bypoll has gained significance ahead of the 2031 Assam Assembly elections, with the BJP fielding former IAS officer Devasish Sharma and the Congress nominating former Batadroba MLA Sibamoni Bora.

The contest is being closely watched as an indicator of the political mood in the Nagaon region ahead of the Assembly polls.
