Over 40,000 affected in Golaghat as Assam reviews flood relief measures

Assam Panchayat and Rural Development Minister and Bokakhat MLA Atul Bora on Saturday, August 1 chaired a review meeting with Cluster Level Federations (CLFs) in Golaghat district to assess the impact of the recent floods and discuss relief measures for affected families, particularly women associated with self-help groups (SHGs).

The meeting focused on evaluating the extent of flood-related damage and identifying ways in which the Panchayat and Rural Development Department can support flood-affected households and restore disrupted livelihood activities. Bora interacted with CLF representatives at the mandal level to obtain a detailed assessment of the situation across the district.

Officials informed the meeting that the floods caused extensive damage in several areas, including Koliapani, Komarbandha, Kakodonga and Bokakhat. A large number of women-led self-help groups suffered losses after their ongoing livelihood activities were severely disrupted by the disaster.

According to district officials, the floods affected around 40,830 people across 117 villages under four revenue circles in Golaghat district. The inundation also damaged nearly 2,969.44 hectares of agricultural land, impacting farming and rural livelihoods.

Representatives from Cluster Level Federations under five development blocks—Golaghat Central, Golaghat East, Golaghat West, Gomariguri and Morangi—participated in the meeting. They presented block-wise assessments of the damage and discussed the challenges faced by flood-affected families and self-help groups while seeking guidance on the implementation of relief and rehabilitation measures.

The meeting also reviewed the damage caused to houses constructed under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY), besides the destruction of roads and other public infrastructure across the district.

Addressing the participants, Bora assured that the state government would take necessary steps to assist those affected by the floods. He said the concerns and proposals raised during the meeting would be placed before Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to explore appropriate solutions and ensure timely relief and rehabilitation for flood-affected residents of Golaghat and other districts in Upper Assam.
