Railway Services Crippled in Assam amid Citizenship (Amendment) Act Protests

Guwahati, December 15, 2019:

The widespread protests against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) have impacted the railway services in Assam and several passengers have been stranded because of the cancellation of the trains travelling to the different districts of the northeastern state.

“Because the protesters had burned down the Chabua railway station in Dibrugarh recently, the trains travelling towards Tinsukia have been affected.

Similarly, following the ongoing clashes in West Bengal in the wake of the Bill's passage, the trains moving towards Malda have also been cancelled, according to reports,” said DGM, Guwahati Railways, Pranab Jyoti Sharma.

He also informed that the passenger trains are yet to resume services. It may be mentioned here that several passengers were stranded in the Guwahati railway station following the mass protests in the city. Curfew was also imposed to control the situation. The internet services have also been suspended till December 18 in the State.

Widespread protests have been going on in Assam over the Citizenship Bill and the agitation turned massive post the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha's passage of the controversial legislation. The people of Assam have been opposing the Bill as it it seen to pose a serious threat to the indigenous people and their rights.
