12 students reportedly attempt self-harm at Don Bosco School in Assam's Dibrugarh; administration orders detailed inquiry

An incident involving self-harm behaviour among students was reported at Don Bosco HS School in Dibrugarh on September 10, prompting intervention by the school authorities and the district administration.

According to reports, the incident began after one Class VII student allegedly attempted to injure himself using a pencil sharpener blade. Following the incident, 11 other Class VII students reportedly engaged in similar behaviour, with some allegedly using pieces of stationery such as broken scales. The incident resulted in injuries to all 12 students, according to an official order issued by the district administration.

The school authorities intervened and arranged medical attention for the students. Health officials, an Additional Deputy Commissioner and an ambulance were also present at the school as the situation was assessed.

Meanwhile, the Dibrugarh district administration has ordered a detailed inquiry into the incident. As per the official order, Kabita Deka, AES, Inspector of Schools, Dibrugarh, has been entrusted with conducting the inquiry following directions from the District Commissioner.

The Inspector of Schools has been directed to examine all relevant facts and circumstances surrounding the incident and submit a comprehensive report to the District Commissioner within seven days from the date of receiving the order.

The District Child Protection Officer, Dibrugarh, has been instructed to provide necessary assistance and cooperation during the inquiry. The Principal of Don Bosco HS School has also been directed to extend cooperation and coordinate with the Inspector of Schools in connection with the probe.

The administration's inquiry is expected to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident and examine the events that led to the injuries sustained by the students.

The school has also indicated that counselling will be arranged for the students, with attention to their emotional well-being and prevention of any recurrence. The situation at the school is currently reported to be under control.
