In a unique social initiative, 150 couples were married in a mass wedding ceremony held at Fulbari in Balipara of Assam's Sonitpur district on March 8.
The collective marriage programme was organised by Dharma Jagaran Samanwaya (North East unit) in association with Lok Kalyan and Jan Kalyan Sanstha, with support from local residents of Balipara and Rangapara.
According to organisers, the initiative was aimed at helping couples who were unable to conduct their weddings due to financial and other constraints. The marriages were solemnised following traditional rituals and customs.
The large-scale ceremony drew a huge crowd, with people from different parts of the region gathering to witness the event and bless the newly married couples. Organisers said the programme was intended to promote social welfare and support economically weaker families by enabling them to complete their marriage ceremonies with dignity.
