A joint operation by police in Assam’s Bongaigaon district led to the seizure of 23 cattle suspected to have been transported illegally, officials said on Thursday, April 23.
The raid was conducted at the residence of an alleged cattle smuggler, identified as Mannat Ali, in Bartari, a border area between Bongaigaon and Barpeta districts. The operation was jointly carried out by personnel from Abhayapuri and Mererchar police stations under the supervision of the Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) of Abhayapuri.
Police sources said the cattle were seized during the search operation and have since been brought to Abhayapuri Police Station, where they are currently being held. Further investigation into the matter is underway.
Meanwhile, the Goria-Moria-Deshi National Council has alleged that illegal activities such as cattle smuggling and illicit timber trade have been ongoing in the district for an extended period. The organisation has called for stricter enforcement measures to curb such activities.
Authorities have not yet confirmed any arrests in connection with the case, and further details are awaited as the investigation progresses.
