62 snail-eating birds killed, 68 injured in storm in Assam's Jorhat

At least 62 snail-eating birds (Samuk Bhonga) were killed and 68 others injured after strong winds swept through Jorhat on the night of August 24.

At least 62 snail-eating birds (Samuk Bhonga) were killed and 68 others injured after strong winds swept through Jorhat on the night of August 24.

The incident occurred along DCB Road in Jorhat town, where a number of trees have been home to a large group of snail-eating birds.

Following the storm, several birds were found dead or injured in the area. The dead and injured birds have been taken to the Jorhat Regional Forest Office, where they are currently being kept under the supervision of forest officials.

Forest authorities said the injured birds will be shifted to Panbari in Kaziranga for medical treatment and further care.

A forest department ranger said necessary steps are being taken to treat the injured birds and manage the situation.
