The 63rd biennial Mahapalnam of Shree Shree Barnasatra, one of Assam’s historic religious centres, began with traditional rituals and devotional fervour in Morigaon town.
The five-day festival, organised according to the customs of the Hira community, has created a spiritually charged atmosphere across the town. Thousands of devotees gathered at the sprawling premises of Shree Shree Barnasatra on the second day of the celebrations.
Members of the organising committee said the main objective of the Mahapalnam is to pray for world peace and the welfare of humanity. They added that special prayers are being offered for the socio-economic and educational development of the Hira community living in different parts of Assam.
On the opening day, a colourful “Maha Bhagawat Bhraman” procession was taken out through Morigaon town. Thousands of men and women participated in the procession, chanting devotional hymns and creating a vibrant religious ambience.
The organising committee informed that several religious and cultural programmes will continue over the next three days. Prominent personalities from different parts of the state have been invited to attend the festival.
Organisers said the Mahapalnam aims to further strengthen the unique religious traditions of the Hira community and introduce this rich heritage to a wider audience.
