The All Assam Minority Students’ Union (AAMSU) on Saturday launched a series of statewide protests condemning the ongoing eviction drives carried out by the Assam government on government-owned lands. The union has described these evictions as “inhuman,” claiming they are displacing thousands of poor and marginalised families across the state.
In Gossaigaon, the protest was spearheaded by the Western Kokrajhar District Committee of AAMSU. The demonstration was held in front of the union’s district office at Serfanguri, where participants waved banners and placards while shouting slogans like “BJP Go Back,” “AAMSU Zindabad,” and “Stop Inhuman Atrocities.”
Protesters alleged that police attempted to disrupt the peaceful gathering and prevent its success. Despite these obstacles, the demonstration concluded with the submission of a memorandum to the Prime Minister through the Sub-Divisional Officer (SDO).
Meanwhile, in Kokrajhar town—the capital of the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR)—the district unit of AAMSU staged a protest demonstration at Gandhi Park. Protesters attempted to take out a rally in support of their demands, but Kokrajhar police intervened and halted the march, citing concerns over law and order. Undeterred, the demonstrators continued to raise slogans like “Down with the Assam Government,” “Shame on Assam Police,” and “Stop Inhuman Evictions,” creating a charged and emotional atmosphere at the protest site.

The demonstrations come in the wake of recent large-scale eviction drives across Assam. On July 8, the state government evicted people from over 3,500 bighas of land in the Chapar area of Dhubri district. A similar operation was carried out today in Goalpara district’s Paikan area, affecting over 1,080 bighas and displacing numerous families.
Addressing the media, AAMSU Assistant General Secretary Aminul Islam strongly criticized the Assam government’s approach:
Aminul Islam: “We do not accept these inhuman eviction drives. Because of them, common people in Assam are suffering immensely. Students and young children are being deprived of their education. That’s why we have termed these evictions inhuman. We demand an immediate halt to these operations and call for adequate compensation for the affected families.”
AAMSU has urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to intervene and stop what it has termed as “anti-people actions,” warning that continued silence from the central government could deepen the crisis for thousands of Assam’s most vulnerable citizens.
