The Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) has stepped up preparations for the upcoming Sonowal Kachari Autonomous Council (SKAC) elections, with the party holding organisational meetings across council constituencies despite the election schedule yet to be announced.
An election preparation meeting was held at Nahoroni in the 16th Khowang Council Constituency on Thursday night, September 10, where party leaders discussed preparations for the polls and the likely candidature of Jon Saikia from the constituency.
The meeting was attended by former Chabua MLA and leader in charge of the SKAC elections Ponakon Barua, AGP central representative Putul Sonowal, central general secretary Sunil Rajkonwar and Harishwar Changmai, vice-president of the party's farmers' wing Kisan Parishad.
Other office-bearers from the party's central and district committees were also present.
AGP leaders said the party was prepared to contest all 32 seats independently if an alliance was not finalised for the council elections.
Jon Saikia, who is seeking the AGP ticket from the Khowang constituency, expressed confidence about his electoral prospects and said he expected strong public support for the party.
The AGP has been holding organisational activities across council constituencies as it prepares for the elections, the date for which is yet to be officially announced.
