Senior BJP leader and Rajya Sabha MP Mission Ranjan Das has asserted that the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) no longer holds organizational strength in Sribhumi district, Assam.
He claimed that the regional party has become virtually non-existent in the area and that no candidate contesting on an AGP ticket would be able to secure a win under the current circumstances.
Das made these remarks during a significant political development at the BJP district office in Sribhumi, where Archana Sarkar, president of the AGP's women’s wing in the district, joined the BJP along with more than 50 supporters.
The mass defection is being viewed as a major blow to AGP’s already waning grassroots support in the region.
Despite AGP being a coalition partner in the ruling alliance, Das indicated that in the upcoming Gaon Panchayat elections, the BJP may consider giving 3–4 District and Anchalik Panchayat seats to alliance candidates. However, he emphasized that AGP’s electoral viability in Sribhumi remains bleak.
