Raijor Dal chief Akhil Gogoi on May 6 launched a sharp attack on Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, accusing him of making false claims about not campaigning in Sivasagar during the recently concluded Assam Assembly Elections 2026.
Responding to a question from reporters over Sarma’s claim that he did not campaign in Sivasagar, Gogoi said the Chief Minister had personally campaigned twice in the constituency in support of BJP candidate Kushal Dowari.
According to Gogoi, Sarma first held a major campaign rally at Talatal Ghar on March 15, where around 20,000 women reportedly attended the programme. Gogoi claimed the event, which also included the distribution of cheques, created significant political pressure during the campaign. Sarma later addressed another election rally at Bali Field in Sivasagar town on April 7, he added.
Calling Sarma a “lying Chief Minister,” Gogoi alleged that despite extensive campaigning and administrative support, the BJP failed to defeat him in the constituency.
“Even after coming to Sivasagar twice to campaign, he could not make Kushal Dowari win. Now he is making excuses by claiming he did not campaign here,” Gogoi said.
He also accused the BJP leadership of using state machinery and spending huge amounts during the campaign.
Gogoi retained the Sivasagar seat in one of Assam’s closely watched contests, defeating BJP’s Kushal Dowari by a margin of over 17,000 votes.
