Amid intensifying political calculations ahead of Assam assembly polls 2026, Akhil Gogoi, president of Raijor Dal and MLA from Sivasagar, has pressed the Congress to expedite alliance discussions and give the responsibility to former Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) chief Bhupen Kumar Borah to lead the negotiations with opposition parties.
Speaking to the media on seat-sharing and alliance deliberations, Gogoi said that APCC president Gaurav Gogoi had informed him via WhatsApp that the upcoming Assembly session will be held from February 16 to 19. He indicated that discussions on the alliance would take place during this period.
However, Gogoi made it clear that Raijor Dal is keen on the immediate finalisation of an alliance framework.
“We want the alliance to be finalised at the earliest,” he said, reiterating his party’s commitment to opposition unity. He added that Raijor Dal has consistently supported all parties aligned against the ruling dispensation.
Recalling earlier coordination efforts under Bhupen Borah’s leadership, Gogoi said the Opposition Oikyo Moncho functioned cohesively during Borah’s tenure as APCC president. “There was mutual understanding, dialogue and cooperation among all of us,” he noted.
Gogoi asserted that Borah’s experience and practical political acumen make him best suited to steer the alliance talks. “He understands where Congress is strong and where Raijor Dal can perform better. If given the responsibility, we can sit together for a day and arrive at a final decision,” he said.
Terming Borah’s earlier role in uniting opposition leaders as a “practical and correct decision,” Gogoi urged the Congress leadership to once again entrust him with the task of negotiating the alliance structure.
The developments signal renewed efforts among opposition parties in Assam to consolidate their strategy ahead of upcoming political contests, with alliance arithmetic expected to play a decisive role.
