The seizure of a vehicle transporting cattle illegally during the night has once again exposed the active presence of an illegal cattle smuggling racket in the state.
A six-wheeler truck carrying cattle unlawfully was intercepted at North Salmara in Assam’s Bongaigaon district on February 19. The vehicle, bearing registration number AS25FC 4396, was reportedly travelling from Dhubri district towards North Salmara when locals noticed the suspicious movement.
According to reports, the driver attempted to flee after hitting a local resident while trying to escape. However, alert locals managed to apprehend the vehicle along with 16 cattle being transported illegally.
Upon receiving information about the incident, police arrived at the spot and took custody of the seized vehicle and cattle to Abhayapuri Police Station for further investigation.
Allegations of illegal cattle smuggling have been persistent in the district for a long time.
