Union Home Minister Amit Shah on January 30, launched a Rs 692 crore project for the restoration and rejuvenation of 15 scientifically identified wetlands across Assam, aimed at improving flood management in the Brahmaputra river basin.
The wetlands were selected following a scientific assessment conducted by the Space Applications Centre, which studied flood patterns and water flow in the state. Under the project, excess floodwater from the Brahmaputra will be diverted into these wetlands to reduce the impact of recurring floods that cause widespread damage every year.
Addressing the gathering, Shah said the river is central to Assam’s culture and economy, describing it as the lifeline of farmers and a mother figure for the people of the state. He acknowledged that annual floods have repeatedly led to devastation across many regions.
He said the initiative was part of a commitment made during the previous Assembly elections to work towards a flood-free Assam, adding that the inauguration marked a step towards fulfilling that promise before the next elections.
Beyond flood mitigation, the project is expected to generate multiple economic benefits. The restored wetlands will support irrigation, enabling farmers to cultivate crops up to three times a year, Shah said. The initiative is also expected to promote animal husbandry and strengthen the dairy sector.
The wetlands are also proposed to be developed for water-based activities and tourism, which the government believes could emerge as a new attraction and create additional livelihood opportunities.
