Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s proposed visit to the Barak Valley has generated intense political excitement, with preparations in full swing for a major public meeting in Natunpur village of Katigorah.
Party leaders and the district administration are making elaborate arrangements ahead of the high-profile programme.
According to sources, Shah will arrive in the Barak Valley on February 21. Upon reaching Natunpur, a village located near the India-Bangladesh international border, he is scheduled to spend about half an hour at a programme organised by the Border Security Force (BSF). Following the BSF engagement, he will address a large public gathering in the area.
The visit has triggered enthusiasm among party workers and supporters, who have intensified mobilisation efforts across the region. Security arrangements have been significantly strengthened, with the entire area being spruced up for the event. Senior leaders of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), along with top administrative officials, have conducted multiple inspections to review preparedness. Given Natunpur’s proximity to the international border, BSF personnel have heightened vigilance in the area.

Residents of Natunpur village, situated close to the India-Bangladesh border in the Barak Valley, have also expressed excitement, stating that it is the first time since Independence that a senior Union minister is attending a public meeting in the locality on such a scale.
Amid the enthusiasm, however, longstanding developmental concerns have resurfaced. Locals point out persistent deficiencies in education, healthcare, drinking water supply and communication infrastructure. In medical emergencies, residents reportedly have to travel 60 to 70 kilometres to access hospital facilities.
People in the region are hopeful that the Home Minister’s visit will open new avenues for development. Many believe that the establishment of a manufacturing hub in Natunpur and adjoining areas could generate employment opportunities and secure the future of unemployed youth in this border belt.
All eyes are now on whether the visit by the Union Home Minister will translate into tangible progress for this long-neglected frontier region.
